Reflection: Don't Just Get Dressed, Get Ready!

REFLECTION:

You know, sometimes I think God has a sense of humor!

Yesterday, I was reflecting on how uniforms remind us of where we belong. When you see someone wearing a Maryknoll uniform, you know what school they attend. And wouldn't you know it, today St. Paul is talking about clothing again!

And it's even funnier because this week, we've had all kinds of conversations at the high school about uniforms. Shorts that are too short, wrong colors, grooming standards, you name it! I opened today's reading and thought, "Lord, are you getting involved in our uniform problems too?"

It reminded me of the movie Kingsman, with that famous line, "Manners maketh man." The movie places a lot of emphasis on how a gentleman dresses and carries himself.

In today's first reading, St. Paul tells us to put on the armor of God. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the shoes of peace.

Notice that every piece of armor has a meaning and a purpose. It's not just about putting something on. It's about what that piece represents and how it prepares us for what lies ahead. And maybe we should approach getting dressed every morning in the same way.

When we put on our shirt, we pray, "Lord, help me remember who I am and whom I belong to."

When we put on our shoes, "Lord, guide my steps today and help me bring peace wherever I go."

When we look in the mirror, "Lord, help me reflect your love in everything I say and do today."

You know, as priests, we actually have prayers traditionally associated with the vestments we put on for Mass. Each vestment reminds us of our responsibility and the sacred mission entrusted to us.

Now, don't get me wrong! That doesn't mean we can ignore the school dress code! Because whether it's school, work, sports, or any organization that requires a uniform, there are rules and expectations that come with it. And when we choose not to follow those expectations, there are consequences. That's part of life!

Belonging to something doesn't just come with privileges. It also comes with responsibilities.

But we also have to remember that you can wear the correct uniform and still have the wrong attitude. We can look the part without actually living it.

And that's where today's Gospel comes in.

Jesus is warned that Herod wants to kill Him. But Jesus doesn't run away or abandon His mission. He stands firm because He knows who He is, whom He belongs to, and what He has been sent to do.

That's what St. Paul is asking of us: to be clothed not just in the right things, but in the right values.

So tomorrow morning, when you're getting dressed for school, work, or wherever you're going, take a moment to pray as you put on your clothes. Ask God to clothe you with truth, kindness, patience, compassion, integrity, and faith. Because yesterday, we were reminded that our uniform tells people where we belong. Today, St. Paul reminds us that our actions should tell people whom we belong to.

And remember, the clothes may make the man, but it's our faith and character that make us disciples of Christ.
