Reflection: God Even Knows the Hairs on Your Head!

Optional Memorial of Saint Hedwig, Religious
Brief Background:
Saint Hedwig of Silesia (1174–1243) was born into a noble family in Bavaria, Germany, and married Henry I, Duke of Silesia (in present-day Poland). Although she lived a life of wealth and privilege, she devoted herself to prayer, humility, and serving the poor and sick. She helped establish hospitals, monasteries, and charitable institutions. After her husband's death, she lived a simple life at the monastery in Trzebnica, where her daughter was abbess. She was canonized in 1267.
Patron Saint of: Silesia, Poland, orphans, widows, brides, and those experiencing difficult marriages. She is also invoked for help with debt and financial difficulties.
REFLECTION:
In today's Gospel, Jesus says something that caught my attention: "Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid." And when I read that, the first thought that came to my mind was, "Who has the time and patience to count every single hair on someone's head?"
I mean, think about it. Would you actually sit there and count every strand of hair on someone's head? I don't think even our own parents would have the patience to do that!
Of course, for some of us, the counting might be a little easier than for others! But think about what Jesus is really trying to tell us.
He's not telling us that God is really good at counting. He's telling us something much more beautiful about God's love. God knows us so personally, so intimately, that even the smallest details of our lives matter to him. And I think that's something we sometimes forget.
We live in a world where everyone seems to be busy. We're busy with work, with responsibilities, with our own problems. Sometimes we're so busy that we don't even have the patience to listen to someone finish telling us a story!
And yet, here's God, who knows every single hair on our head. Why? Because when you truly love someone, you pay attention to them.
Think about a mother who knows something is wrong with her child, even when the child says, "I'm fine." Or a husband or wife who notices that something is bothering their spouse without a single word being spoken. That's what love does. Love pays attention. And that's the kind of love Jesus is revealing to us today.
Today we also remember Saint Hedwig, who was a duchess. She had wealth, power, and influence. She could have spent her life having people serve her. But instead, she chose to serve others, especially the poor and those who were suffering. She paid attention to people whom others often overlooked. And I think that's a beautiful connection to today's Gospel.
If God pays attention to even the smallest details of our lives, shouldn't we also learn to pay attention to the people around us?
Sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives that we fail to notice someone who's struggling. Someone who needs encouragement. Someone who simply needs another person to listen. And then Jesus ends with these beautiful words: "Do not be afraid."
Why shouldn't we be afraid?
Because the God who knows every hair on our head also knows what's going on in our hearts. He knows our worries, our struggles, our fears, and even the things we don't share with anyone. And he doesn't forget us.
So today, perhaps there are two things we can take away from this Gospel. First, remember that no matter what you're going through, God knows you, God sees you, and God loves you.
And second, like Saint Hedwig, let's learn to pay a little more attention to the people around us. Because sometimes, the simplest way we can show someone God's love is by letting them know that they have not been forgotten.
