Reflection: Learning To Stand Straight Again

REFLECTION:

Have any of you watched those chiropractor videos on social media? You know, those videos where people come to this one doctor with all kinds of back problems. Some have been living with pain for years. Others can barely stand straight or move comfortably. And the chiropractor begins evaluating them, making adjustments to their spine, their neck, their limbs. You hear all those cracking sounds!

And what I find interesting is watching their reaction afterward. Some immediately feel relief. Others begin standing straighter, moving around, and doing things they couldn't do before. And I thought about those videos when I read today's Gospel.

We hear about a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years. Eighteen years! Imagine living that long unable to stand straight. And what I find beautiful about this Gospel is that the woman never asks Jesus to heal her.

Jesus sees her. He calls her forward. He lays His hands upon her. And immediately, she stands up straight and begins glorifying God. Notice something here. Jesus takes the initiative.

The woman doesn't have to beg Him. She doesn't have to explain her suffering. Jesus sees what she has been carrying, and He reaches out to her. And I think there's a beautiful message here for all of us. Because while we may not be physically bent over like this woman, I wonder how many of us are walking around spiritually bent over.

Bent over by the responsibilities we carry. By worries about our families, our finances, our future. Bent over by guilt, disappointments, broken relationships, or things that happened years ago that we still haven't let go of. And sometimes we've been carrying these burdens for so long that we've gotten used to them.

Just like this woman, we forget what it feels like to stand straight. But here's the good news of today's Gospel. Even when we forget to look up, God never stops looking toward us. Jesus sees us. He knows what we're carrying. And He continues to invite us to come to Him. But there's one more detail I love about this Gospel.

When the woman is healed, she doesn't simply stand up straight and walk away. She glorifies God.

For eighteen years, her body had been bent toward the ground. But now she can stand upright and lift her eyes toward heaven in thanksgiving. And perhaps that's what Jesus wants to do in our lives.

Not necessarily take away every problem or difficulty we face, but help us stand upright again. To remind us that our burdens do not define us, that our struggles do not have the final word, and that we are never beyond the reach of God's grace. And in our first reading, St. Paul reminds us to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving toward one another.

Perhaps that's another invitation for us today.

If Jesus helps us stand up, shouldn't we also help others stand up? Because sometimes our words, our kindness, our forgiveness, or simply our willingness to listen can help lift the burdens someone else is carrying.

So today, perhaps we can ask ourselves two questions: What is keeping me bent over in life? What burden do I need to bring before Jesus? And secondly, am I helping the people around me stand up, or am I adding to the weight they're already carrying?

My Friends, the beautiful thing about today's Gospel is that the woman came into the synagogue bent over, but she left standing straight and glorifying God.

May we, too, encounter Christ in such a way that we leave His presence standing a little straighter, carrying our burdens a little lighter, and with hearts more grateful for His love.
